Being physically active and eating a healthy diet can have a positive effect on your health and wellbeing at any age. Regular physical activity has a host of health benefits, including improving cardiorespiratory and functional health, cognitive functioning, strength and balance, and reducing the risk of diabetes, falling, and heart disease. Furthermore, it can alleviate stress, depression, and anxiety and therefore improve overall wellbeing and quality of life. This applies to both carers and care recipients, including those who are frail or affected by disabilities and/or other medical conditions. For care recipients, introducing regular activity can help them to maintain their autonomy and live independently for longer. For carers, improved fitness can help them carry out the physical aspect of their job, e.g. lifting and supporting care recipients, with less chance of injury and fatigue. Physical activity can also bring variation and diversity to the daily routine and can be a fun and interactive method of spending quality time together in a way that benefits both of you.
Our physical activity programme focuses on the maintenance and improvement of physical fitness, which will help older people to cope with the activities of daily living and improve autonomy. The following are key aspects, integral to fitness, that are covered by this programme:
The simple exercises provided through the WHOLE Programme can be supplemented through other daily activities like walking, climbing stairs, doing household chores, or gardening. It is not necessary to partake in strenuous or difficult exercise regimes or sports to be fit — everyday movement and physical activity, combined with some gentle training, can make a huge difference. A key point to remember is that even those who cannot stand or need support to stand can take advantage of this programme through the adapted exercises provided. Any physical activity is better than no physical activity! We recommend utilising the full scope of exercises on offer by this programme to get the best results.
