Electrodynamics of Single Molecule Fluorescence

An overview of the peculiarities of single molecule fluorescence near interfaces and nanoscopic structures is given. If a fluorescing molecule is placed near a discontinuity of the refractive index (e.g. dielectric or metallic interface), the fluorescence properties such as lifetime, intensity, and spectrum can change significantly. Besides being of interest from a fundamental science point of view, the knowledge of these changes is of great importance for many spectroscopic techniques.
