"Science meets Practice": 49th Annual Meeting of the Society for Ecology

The annual conference of the Society for Ecolog takes place from 9-13 September in Muenster, and "aims to stimulate exchange between the academic ecological community and practitioners in order to find applied solutions to environmental problems" (GfÖ, 2019). There will be a total of 40 thematic sessions, with 385 lectures and 198 posters, as well as workshops and discussions by around 650 scientists from 34 countries. ZIN members Tillmann Buttschardt and Bodo Philipp will also participate.
Prof. Buttschardt (Landscape Ecology) focusses on the question: "The ’new’ agroecology: An approach for a sustainable agriculture?” in his session on 10.09.19 at 16.40. He interprets agroecology as a combination of the three dimensions science, practice and movement. Against this background, his lecture will discuss the current social issues of insect shrinkage, pesticides, animal welfare, eutrophication, agricultural promotion and nature conservation vs. agriculture. The session will take place in Fürstenberghaus room F041.

In a joint session with Friederike Gabel (Landscape Ecology) and Katrin Wendt-Potthoff (Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research), Prof. Bodo Philipp (Molecular Microbiology and Biotechnology) will discuss the environmental influences of microplastics. The session will focus on the effects of microplastics on maritime as well as on limnic and terrestrial organisms and ecosystems. It will take place on 10 September at 9.25 a.m. at JUR1 (Juridicum), the lecture by Prof. Philipp will start at 10.40 a.m..
