In this discussion-based seminar, students will explore the production, distribution, and reception of books (broadly defined) in 19th century America. Among the topics to be considered are: the role of print in th Civil War, industrial production technologies and new channels of distribution, increased literacy rates and changing readership, and newspapers and a burgeoning national literature. Weekly texts will serve as the basis for in-class discussion and independent research.
