Thomas Paine's bestselling pamphlet "Common Sense" (1776) is generally considered to have helped spark the movement that eventually led to the independence of the United States of America. Since then, the book and other printed materials (and their reception) have played an important role in shaping the history of America. In this course, we will pinpoint some of the most important aspects of American book history, for example, Puritan print culture or the role of print in the Civil War.
