This reading-and-writing-intensive course introduces BA students to works of American experimental literature. We will ask what is fiction by looking at works that bend and break literary forms, from fiction that is aware of its own fictionality to narratives that can be told in various orders. Each class will feature a discussion of the week’s reading assignment, and students will be required to produce one research project by the end of the semester, engaging the themes and topics of the class. These include, but are not limited to: advertising, representation, perception, memory, structure, textuality, para- and peritext. We will discuss the concepts of authorship, genre, formalism, surrealism, metafiction, hypertext, and multi-media.
