This course is intended to provide basic information on the foundational aspects of language and linguistics. It will introduce basic linguistic notions and the methodological and technical tools to do linguistics, all of which are essential in the further study of languages. Introduction to General Linguistics tackles the theoretical foundations of linguistics as well as the descriptive techniques at the levels of phonetics/phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics. Special attention will be paid to linguistic diversity: all the phenomena to be dealt with will be explained from a cross-linguistic perspective, adducing both European and less-known and under-investigated ‘exotic’ languages. Another important aspect to be elaborated upon is the function of language in communication and the comparison of natural human languages with other symbolic systems.
Was ist Sprache eigentlich? Und womit beschäftigen sich Sprachwissenschaftler? Welchen Nutzen hat es, sich mit Linguistik auseinanderzusetzen und inwieweit hilft sie mir weiter? In dieser Veranstaltung werden den Studenten die wichtigsten Aspekte der niederländischen Sprachwissenschaft vorgestellt. Es werden linguistische Grundbegriffe zu Phonetik/Phonologie, Morphologie, Semantik und Syntax sowie zu Sprachgebrauch, Sprachvariation und Sprachwandel behandelt. Anhand von Übungen werden die Studenten die wichtigsten Grundlagen der Linguistik kennenlernen. Sie sollen einen Eindruck bekommen, wie wir mittels sprachwissenschaftlicher Methoden die Strukturen von Sprache sowie Spracherwerb und Sprachverarbeitung untersuchen können.
