The landscape of right-wing politics is changing. New right-wing political movements emerge, new right-wing political parties are founded and have considerable electoral successes, and the styles and strategies of right-wing politics are transforming. This course addresses the politics and the political ideology of what can be called the ‘New Right’. It deals with the characteristics of the politics and the ideology of the New Right and reflects upon the specific political challenges that the New Right poses to contemporary democracies. The course has three parts. First, varieties of the New Right are considered. While the term implies a differentiation from ‘old’ forms of the political right, it has been used at different times and in different contexts. In particular, it seems important to consider these varieties when addressing the question if the New Right should be characterised as “a far-right strand of conservatism” or as “a strand of right-wing extremism” (Salzborn 2016). Second, and with a focus on the most recent forms of the New Right, the political ideology of the New Right is analysed in more detail. Particular attention is paid to the concept of ‘ethno-pluralism’. Third, the political strategies of the recent forms of the New Right are addressed. The course examines the relationship of the New Right with right-wing parties in parliaments and compares its politics with that of other political movements such as left-wing social movements.

As a ‘Studienleistung’, participants will prepare a presentation. The ‘Prüfungsleistung’ is a term paper of the length as required by the applying study regulations.
