This course examines the American sociologist and historian James Loewen’s 1995 book Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong, controversies surrounding it, and whether it has a continued relevance for history and civics education in our ”age of alternative facts.” This course will also explore possible solutions to the problem of miseducation in American history classrooms, such as those advocated by Sam Wineburg in Why Learn History (When It’s Already on Your Phone)
This course will be conducted in English and use English-language literature. Students are expected to write a paper or sit for an oral exam on a historical topic.
Because this course is structured around the book, students are expected to purchase copies of Lies My Teacher Told Me and Why Learn History (When It’s Already on Your Phone) Older editions of Lies My Teacher Told Me are acceptable.
