Description |
Ian Wood, professor of the University of Leeds, has been the most outstanding British historian of early medieval Europe for many decades. He specializes in the Merovingian kingdoms, but his wide interests extend also to the Visigothic, Lombard, Burgundian and Anglo-Saxon world, encompassing both political, religious and cultural history. He also pays attention to the history of research into the early medieval world. During this term, we will read his seminal study on the modern origins of the early middle ages, where he shows the construction of multifaceted, even contradictory representations and images of the supposedly dark ages during later periods, extending from the middle ages through the early modern into the modern period. By reading this collection of studies, we will get new insights not only into early medieval Europe, but also into the history of historical scholarship and of the historical profession in various European countries until the present day. |
