This seminar focuses on the shifting debate around monuments and memory culture in Germany and the United States, particularly their role in the German concept of "poltische Bildung" or the US-centric idea of "public history." Themes include monuments and memorials devoted to the First World War, Slavery and the American Civil War, the Holocaust, and 9/11. The course is particularly suited to students wishing to learn more about the local memorial landscape and will be supplemented by visits to memorials and monuments in Münster as well as guest lectures by practioners in the field.
Please note that this course will be conducted in English, including all readings. |
