Foreign affairs are often reduced to relationships between individual states, that are completely unaffected by rules. However, since the end of the second world war, the presence and importance of International Organizations have structured the ways in which states behave. Furthermore, the rules created in International Organizations have large repercussions on domestic politics.
In this course, we will read a selection of the foundational literature about International Organizations from the field of International Relations theory. This way, students will get an overview of the ideas, scholars developed, in order to understand International Organizations and the evolution of International Organizations over time. Additionally, we will look at different methods of measurement of International Authority. Prior knowledge of the theories of International Relations will be helpful but is not required.
To pass this course, students will have to do a presentation about one text in class. Furthermore, students are required to write a summary about a second text. A 90-minute exam will be held in the last week of course, testing the general understanding of International Organizations theory. To pass the final exam, regular attendance and a close reading of the literature is required.
Die 90-minütige Abschlussklausur wird am 03.07.2019 von 14:00 - 16:00 Uhr geschrieben.
