The course offers an introduction to the different stages and forms in the development of Buddhism: 1) Foundational doctrines and Theravada-Buddhism, 2) Mahayana-Buddhism, 3) Chinese and Japanese developments, 4) Tantric Buddhism. Thematically the course focusses on both, the interconnectedness but also the differences and transformations within the diverse Buddhist tradition. The basic textbook for the course is: P. Schmidt-Leukel, Understanding Buddhism. Selected samples of Buddhist source texts (inn English translation) will be provided during the course.

This course will be taught in English. Reading amount: 10-20 pages/week. Each participant will have to introduce at least one of the sessions.
