The controversial discourse of evidence-based policy and practice in education: a discussion with experts - Einzelansicht

In recent years, the idea that empirical evidence should inform decisions and actions of both policy makers and practitioners in the field of education has become increasingly popular in Germany. While one could get the impression that the concept of evidence-based policy and practice (EBPP) enjoys uncontested acceptance at a first glance, a closer look reveals an increasingly controversial debate evolving around the advantages and disadvantages both of relying and not relying on research based knowledge in the field of education. This course aims at giving students a general understanding of EBPP and intends to discuss both its chances and limitations. During the course of the seminar, two international researchers are invited as experts in the field of EBPP: Eva Lloyd from the University of East London and Martyn Hammersley from the Open University. One being a proponent and the other taking a critical perspective, they will both bring forward their ideas and discuss them with the students: In the end, participants will be able to find their own informed position towards EBPP. As the course aims at entering an international discussion on EBPP and at preparing students for the discussion with experts, most materials as well as class communication will be in English. However, it will be taken into account that most participants do not speak English as their first language so that basic information and materials will also be provided in German.
