Programme structure and content
For details regarding the structure of the master’s degree programme, elective course options and required examinations, please consult the module descriptions listed in the appendix of the examination regulations for the master’s degree programme “German Law”.
Study objective
The LLM master’s degree programme provides foreign lawyers with fundamental knowledge of German law, enabling them to specialise in one of eight different profile areas. Upon successful completion of the programme, the candidate is awarded a Master of Laws degree (LLM).
Please note that completion of the “German Law” master’s programme does not entitle graduates to practice law in Germany. Only under specific conditions are EU foreign nationals permitted to apply for practical legal training (juristischer Vorbereitungsdienst) or admission to the bar in Germany.
Course of studies
The master's degree programme "German Law" consists of six modules:
- Basismodul
- Erweiterungsmodul I
- Erweiterungsmodul II
- Erweiterungsmodul III
- Profilmodul
- Abschlussmodul

Orientation Day
At the beginning of every semester the Law Faculty hosts an Orientation Day which is aimed at welcoming the new Master Students.
On the Orientation Day you will receive all information which is important for your upcoming law studies at Münster. You will have the opportunity to meet your contact persons, to get to know the different facilities of the Faculty and to get advice on the question of choosing courses.
Furthermore you will be able to make your firsts contacts with other Master Students and International Guest Students. You should not miss this important event!

Academic Calendar
The standard duration of study is three semesters. Within this period candidates are required to successfully complete six modules – the introductory module, three extension module, a profile module and the final module – with a combined total of at least 90 ECTS credit points.
Academic supervision
Students receive academic support and advice from a supervisor for the duration of their degree programme. Shortly after commencing your programme, you will be asked to choose a professor or habilitated member of the academic staff in the Faculty of Law to be your academic supervisor.
