Paracelsus Medizinische Privatuniversität, Salzburg, Austria

Group Description

Brief description of legal entity
The Paracelsus Medical University (PMU) Salzburg is a private university that was inaugurated in 2002 and is dedicated to medical teaching and biomedical research. The PMU is headed by Prof. Dr. Herbert Resch (Rector) and by Dr. Michael Nake (Chancellor). Since 2003, the PMU provides medical education to 50 stringently selected MD students per year. The PMU has paralleled its teaching curriculum with the one at Mayo Medical School, which is the base of a strong collaboration with the Mayo Clinic and Mayo Medical School. Besides teaching, the PMU developed a strong research program in Regenerative and Translational Medicine. In that respect, the Institute of Molecular Regenerative Medicine (head: Ludwig Aigner) was installed in November 2008 as an endowed professor position by the state of Salzburg. Prof. Aigner is vice president of the Austrian Neuroscience Association and founding president of the Austrian society for stem cell research and regenerative medicine.

Main tasks
We identify brain repair mechanisms and aim to develop therapeutic strategies that are based on such mechanisms. Within INMIND, we will establish culture systems providing microglia of defined activity states, determine the effects of microglia states on NPCs’ biology in vitro, quantify the impacts of in vivo modulation of microglial activity state on neurogenesis and regeneration in ND, and determine the modulatory activities of neural progenitors on microglia activity states in vitro and in vivo.

Participation in INMiND: WP1 / WP2 (leader) / WP5 / WP6 / WP10 / WP12.

Previous experience relevant to INMiND tasks

Histological, ultrastructural and optical imaging analysis of neurogenesis. Axonal regeneration. Transgenic animal models. Viral mediated gene transfer of neurotrophic factors. Animal models of PD and HD. Neural progenitor cell (NPC) cultures and co-cultures of mesenchymal stem cells and NPCs
