Setting up a OpenVPN Connection with Windows
You have installed an up-to-date version of Microsoft Windows.
You have set your network access password in the IT Portal.
1. Installation of the OpenVPN-Client
1. Download and save the file
Download the OpenVPN Client for Windows 10 .
To download the software, you may need to log in with your WWU ID and WWU password.
(Note: To download the latest version please visit the developer's page.)
Confirm to download the OpenVPN-Software and the profile by clicking on "Save file".
3. Starting the Installation
Start the installation of the software by double clicking the downloaded file.
4. Starting the Installation Client
Click "Next" to start the installation of the OpenVPN Client.
5. Accepting the License Agreement
Accept the license terms by selecting "I Agree". Then select "Next".
If the upcoming licensing steps are no longer displayed after the installation (Windows 11), go to the second main step "Import of the OpenVPN profile".
6. Choose components
Leave the component selection as it is. Then select "Next".
7. Choose Install Location
Leave the installation path as preset and select "Install".
8. Completing the Installation
Click "Finish" to complete the installation.
2. Import of the OpenVPN profile
1. Download of the OpenVPN-Profile
Download the OpenVPN-Profil "wwu" .
To download the profile, you may need to log in with your WWU identifier and WWU password.
2. Opening the OpenVPN Client
For the first use it may be necessary to start the "OpenVPN GUI" once. The software should then start automatically when the computer is switched on.
3. Import of the OpenVPN profile
Afterwards you will find the symbol for OpenVPN at the bottom right of the toolbar. Right-click on the icon and select "Import".
4. Select the OpenVPN profile
Select the downloaded OpenVPN profile and confirm the selection with "Open". The successful import is confirmed with a message. There you click "Ok".
3. Starting & Ending the VPN-Connection
1. Establishing connection
With another right click on the OpenVPN symbol in the toolbar, a new menu appears in which you can select "Connect".
2. Grant admin privileges
If you are not an administrator on your computer, a message appears stating that you are not a member of the "Open VPN Administrators" group. You can confirm this with "Yes", whereupon you may have to log in as an administrator.
3. Establish OpenVPN connection
In the last step, enter your WWU user ID and the network access password and select "Ok" to establish the connection. (Note: The network access password is not your normal WWU password. You can set the net access password in the IT Portal.)
