Azadeh Akbari ist seit Dezember 2019 Mitglied in der Arbeitsgruppe Politische Geographie / Sozialgeographie am Institut für Geographie. Nach Abschluss ihres Soziologie-Studiums in Teheran arbeitete Azadeh als Journalistin und UN-Angestellte im Iran. Sie hat ihr Master-Studium in der London School of Economics and Political Sciences im Fach Gender Research abgeschlossen. Sie hat ihre Doktorarbeit als Stipendiatin der Hans-Böckler-Stiftung am geographischen Institut der Universität Heidelberg geschrieben. Ihr Dissertationsprojekt recherchiert den Zusammenhang zwischen Überwachung und räumlicher Gerechtigkeit durch zwei Fallstudien in den urbanen und virtuellen Räumen im Iran. Aktuell befasst sie sich mit den Themen Subjektivierung unter Überwachung und Überwachungspolitik in den Ländern des globalen Südens. Azadeh hat auch das Forschungsnetzwerk „surveillance in the global South“ gegründet.
