Many of the fields studied in model theory are model complete or become so in natural expansions of the language of rings. I will discuss recent joint work with D. Leijnse concerning a weakening of model completeness which is satisfied by fields such as the rational numbers or more general global fields, for which a full model-theoretic understanding is unattainable.
