I will review the construction of the Adams spectral sequence in a triangulated category equipped with a projective or injective class, along with examples from topology and from algebra. Then, following Cohen and Shipley, I will describe higher Toda brackets in a triangulated category. The main result expresses differentials in the Adams spectral sequence as certain higher Toda brackets, which can be viewed as higher cohomology operations. This is joint work with Dan Christensen.
