After giving some general background on Ricci flat metrics and special holonomy, we set up a variational principle over a compact $7$-manifold $M$. The critical points correspond precisely to $G_2$-holonomy structures on $M$. We consider the associated negative gradient flow and establish short-time existence and uniqueness. Finally we discuss stability issues of this flow.
