Every (hyperfinite) subfactor comes with an invariant that measures relative noncommutativity for the ambient algebra over the subalgebra. I will explain this notion and show explicit examples that feature different degrees of noncommutativity. This structure reveals the existence of potentially interesting quantum channels.
