  • Kurzbiografie

    Markus Schleiter forscht am Institut zu Themen der Medienethnologie mit dem Schwerpunkt auf Kinofilme aus Südasien. Weitere Interessengebiete von ihm sind die Themen indigene Gemeinschaften Südasiens und die globale Indigenitätsdebatte, Praxistheorie und Kulturkonzepte sowie ethnographisches Schreiben und die Anthropologie des Staates.
    Im Mittelpunkt seiner Forschungen steht die Video-Filmindustrie der indigenen Gemeinschaft der Santal in Indien. Im Rahmen von multi-sited-Feldstudien besuchte er als teilnehmender Beobachter Musikstudios und Filmsets dieser jungen Filmindustrie in Indien und führte Zuschauerstudien in Dörfern und Städten Indiens und Bangladeschs durch. Ziel der letztgenannten Studien war es, die Medienpraxis des Filmschauens in ihrer Wechselwirkung zur regionalen Alltagskultur zu untersuchen. Derzeit arbeitet er als Mitherausgeber an einer Anthologie zu indigenen Filmindustrien Südasiens. Dieses Buch richtet die Perspektive auf Filmemacher und zeigt, welche Stellung das weiter gefasste Feld der kulturellen Produktion Südasiens (Bourdieu) für das Aufkommen und den Erfolg solch “kulturalisierter” populärer Medien im Subkontinent hat. Er ist auch Initiator eines Archives für Santali VCD-Filme und Musikalben in Frankfurt am Main und Kalkutta.
    Aktuell konzipiert Markus Schleiter ein neues Forschungsvorhaben zum Konsum südkoreanischer Fernsehserien und K-Pop bei indigenen Gemeinschaften Nordostindiens. Er fragt dabei, inwiefern südkoreanische Medien dazu beitragen, Ostasien als Sehnsuchtsort für Konsumwünsche in der Region zu etablieren, aber auch inwieweit diese Medien jeweilige regionale Konzepte einer kosmopolitischen Indigenität der Naga, der Bhutia und der Mizo prägen oder verändern.
    Markus Schleiter hat langjährige Feldforschungen zu sozio-ökonomischen Aushandlungsprozessen in einer Siedlung der Birhor im ländlichen Odisha durchgeführt – die Birhor sind eine vormals nomadisch lebende indigene Gemeinschaft Südasiens. Ebenso arbeitete er zur staatlichen Entwicklungsarbeit für indigene Gemeinschaften in Indien und hat sich mit der kolonialzeitlichen Situierung und Stilmitteln ethnographischer Texte zu diesen Bevölkerungsgruppen beschäftigt.
