Course Content & Educational Objective:
In the seminar “Innovation management within research-intensive industries“, PhD students learn the basics of innovation management. Besides the question why innovations need their own management system, the content addresses how much structuring is needed to enable creative R&D processes while guaranteeing an efficient use of the financial framework. The strategic objectives, implementation and organisation of a successful innovation management as well as the creation of a corporate culture promoting innovation and the importance of an early customer orientation during the innovation process are dealt with. New approaches and instruments in the wide research area of innovation management will also be addressed. Contents of the seminar will be discussed with the help of case studies from the chemical industry as well as by observing trends within research and development of other sectors.

Course Content & Educational Objective:
The “Corporate Strategies“ seminar for PhD students deals with issues, problems and tools relating to strategic management and strategic analysis, such as a portfolio analysis of chemical products. Strategic early detection and strategic control are becoming increasingly important at a time of constant strategic manoeuvring and realignment, especially in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Students take an intensive look at analyzing not only the global environment, but also the situation regarding markets and competition, as well as developments in a company’s particular branch of industry. On this basis they subsequently develop possible strategies for the future. In doing so they work on their own on topics such as “Develop a brand strategy for patent-protected products in the pharmaceuticals market - or concentrate on generic products?”

Content & Educational Objective:
The seminar “Competitor Analysis“ discusses the analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of established and potential competitors. In the seminar the theoretical basics of the competition and branch analysis are taught, different methods to identify possible competition strategies are discussed and applied in case studies. Amongst other things, the students learn by examining examples of the chemical industry and related sectors (e.g. consumer goods industry) how concerns orientate business areas strategically for competition, evaluate and assess the capabilities and aims of competitors, and spot focuses of the competition.
Number of Lecture:
Seminars for PhD students take place every semester and are aimed specifically at students working towards a PhD in Chemistry, Pharmacy, Biology, Biotechnology and Physics. The junior academics work intensively on selected topics relating to innovation management, modern methods of competition analysis, corporate strategies or risk management in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries.
