Polyoxometallates and their application in oxidation catalysis

The chemistry of tungsten heteropolyanions structurally related to the basic Keggin type has been developed extensively during the last two decades. Owing to their unusual properties such as high charges and ionic masses, these compounds attract current attention in view of their significant potential in medicine, material science, and catalysis. In order to find new pathways for the syntheses of catalysts and to understand the mechanistic background of catalysis, one of the most challenging tasks is the design of novel selective and highly efficient catalytic systems containing polyoxoanions. For that reason our research group has focused on the syntheses of novel polyoxometalates and the development of catalysts for oxygen transfer processes

The figure shows a [(M(H2O))3(XW9O33)2]n- - anion (M = transition metal, X = As(III), Sb(III) ). It consits of two (XW9O33)m- - Keggin defect anions.
