Encyclopedia of Arabic Stylistic Devices (EASD): Inaugural Workshop

On 26–27 March 2026, the Institute of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Münster hosted the inaugural workshop of the DFG-funded project Encyclopedia of Arabic Stylistic Devices (EASD). The workshop brought together international scholars to present and discuss the historical development of selected stylistic devices (badīʿ) in the Arabic rhetorical tradition.
Across a series of presentations, participants explored the conceptualization of these figures in different periods of Arabic literary history, with a particular focus on developments from the 14th century onwards. The discussions provided valuable insights into the diversity and evolution of Arabic rhetorical figures and offered important impulses for the further development of the project.

While it was regrettable that some participants were unable to attend in person due to the current political circumstances, the workshop nevertheless benefited greatly from their contributions, including online presentations and shared papers.
The event marked a successful starting point for the EASD project and laid the groundwork for future collaboration. The contributions presented at the workshop are planned to be published as part of the project’s encyclopedia.
