FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The FAQ section is supposed to become your first-aid kit for using the SAC. If you run into trouble with any of the computers, if you do not know how to open certain files, etc. we kindly ask you to first refer to the FAQ and look for help here. Should you not find the answer to your problem here ask the supervisor for help. Please also report your problem to the SAC-Team so we can implement it in the FAQ for the future.

1. General Questions

    Log-in / Log-out under Windows Vista

To log-out under the current installation of Windows Vista you need to go to the Start-menu, hover over or click on the little arrow-tip which points to the right and select "abmelden". Do not simply click on the power-on/off button or the lock. This will not log you out but either set the computer to sleep (which requires the next user to restart it completely because the mouse and keyboard cannot be reactivated properly) or prevent anybody else from using it until a reboot is done. This has happened quite frequently in the first couple of days. Remember: Not logging-out properly can result in data-loss!

    Printing

You can use the xerox copying machine as a printer in the SAC. Use your "Mensa Card" to pay for copies and prints.

     Create PDF files

If you wish to make your document into a pdf-file you can either send it to the virtual pdf-printer (choose "Free PDF XP" as printer and use the pop-up program "Free PDF xp") or access the program via the start-menu (Start -> Alle Programme -> Tools -> Free PDF XP -> Free PDF).

    Speed

Every once in a while a computer in the SAC might operate slowly at sign-on or log-off. This is due to important updates which are being installed. As long as you have made sure that you clicked on the log-off button, your data will be safe. We kindly ask you, not to shut down any computer when it is not operating fast enough but to rather use a different machine for the time being. Shutting down the computers will only increase speed-problems.

2. Video/Audio

    Play a DVD

If you want to directly play a DVD, we recommend you use the VLC-Media player as it is compatible with more file-formats than the Windows-Media player. To do so, simply choose "Wiedergabe mit VLC-Media player" in the pop-up menu. In case the menu does not appear after you inserted a device go to the "Arbeitsplatz" (Start -> Arbeitsplatz), right-click on the DVD and choose the option "Play with VLC media player". As an alternative you can open the VLC-player via the start-menu (Start -> Alle Programme -> Multimedia -> VideoLan -> VLC media player) and access the disc from there (Datei -> Medium öffnen).

Why are the original DVDs not available?

In order to preserve the originals for future generations, we made back-up copies for the SAC. These should work just as well as the originals but if you run into trouble, please contact the supervisor and let the SAC-Team know which DVD caused a problem and what exactly the problem was. We will try to fix it as soon as possible.

Play video files from a USB-Device/Data-Disc

A few seconds after you insert a Data-CD/DVD or a USB-Stick you should get a menu which lets you choose what to do next (A USB-Stick will take a little longer because Windows needs to install particular drivers first). If you want to have a look at the data on the device, chose "Ordner öffnen, um Dateien anzeigen zu lassen". Look for the file you would like to play and open it by double-clicking. The default player should be set to VLC Media player, which we recommend you use. If not, right-click on the file and chose "Öffnen mit" and then "VLC media player". If the initial menu does not appear access the device via the "Arbeitsplatz" (Start -> Arbeitsplatz)

    VHS-Tapes

The SAC offers the possibility to work with VHS tapes. We have 4 small TV-stations each equipped with a VHS player.

3. Office

Our Office software allows you to read and create any popular document formats. Whether you want the OpenOffice file formats or the Microsoft Office 2003, 2007 or 2010 formats does not make a difference.
