The EDG shows Mike Bartlett’s Earthquakes in London

With their choice for the play Earthquakes in London by Mike Bartlett the English Drama Group has once again set their focus on the dramatic examination of the times we live in. The play, which premiered in 2010, shows yet again that the contemporary British world of drama is a vital, wild, disturbing but also a moving matter. Bartlett has written an opulent, racing and highly topical play that touches the topics of global warming, population explosion, corrupt corporations and irresponsible manipulation of the environment. The global themes are always mirrored in the microcosm of one dysfunctional family: Robert, acclaimed scientist and estranged father of three awaits disaster for humanity, “It’s Cabaret, we’ve got our heads down and we’re dancing and drinking as fast as we can. The enemy is on its way, but this time it doesn’t have guns and gas it has storms and earthquakes, fire and brimstone. You were the glimmer. At the end of the tunnel. And you went out."

His three grown daughters live in London and try, each in their own way, to cope with the omnipresent anxiety about the future and to lead a meaningful life. The oldest, Sarah, who has had the responsibility for her younger sisters from an early age on, wins recognition as tough but stressed out environment minister. Freya, however, longs for happiness in her personal life with her husband and a baby on the way. But does she really want the responsibility of bringing a child into this world? Jasmine, the youngest, roams the university world by day and by night she throws herself hedonistically and desperately into London’s nightlife.

The play is a breathtaking and ruthless city crash of scenes, people and decades. It resembles a visual sweeping blow without being moralizing or preaching. Michael Billington („The Guardian”) says about this play, “Mike Bartlett’s Earthquakes in London is the theatrical equivalent of a thrilling roller coaster ride. It swoops and twists, rushes and soars, and provides a great shot of adrenalin-fuelled excitement.” This EDG production is directed by Iris Adamzick.
