Class act

With nearly 44,000 students (winter semester 2015/16), the University of Münster is the fifth-largest university in Germany. Its fifteen faculties offer more than 280 degree programmes in over 120 courses of study in nearly every field in the humanities, medicine and natural sciences.

The University of Münster is also one of Germany's leading institutions with regard to its number of graduates. In 2015, approximately 7,450 students successfully passed their examinations, putting the University at third place nationwide. The University of Münster is also home to the largest training centre for prospective teachers in Germany.

More academic opportunity

The University of Münster began implementing the Bologna Process at an early stage and has since consistently reformed its academic structure to provide internationally recognised bachelor's and master's degrees. The same applies to its teaching degree programmes, in which around one-quarter of all students in Münster are enrolled.

The bachelor's programmes enable students to gain subject-related and professionally oriented skills and key qualifications. The goal is to ensure that graduates are equipped with fundamental professional competence and have realistic chances of success on the labour market.

The master's programmes are based on the central areas of research at the University of Münster. Not only do they reflect the interdisciplinary structures at the University, but also enhance its reputation thanks to a sharply defined orientation on outstanding academic achievement.

The unity of research and teaching is a central tenet at the University of Münster, for only research-based teaching and research-accompanied learning in bachelor's and master's programmes can provide students with an academically sound basis of knowledge.

Evaluation and quality management in teaching

Instructors and students regularly participate in various evaluation procedures at the University of Münster. The coordinated measures and instruments were established in order to ensure and continue enhancing the quality of teaching.

Because the results of these reflective processes are integrated into interfaculty target agreements, the evaluations play a crucial role in improving teaching methods and study conditions at the University of Münster.

The quality of the University's degree programmes are assessed in cooperation with external evaluators in (re-)accreditation processes on a regular basis.

Anyone who teaches in Münster can move beyond the limits of their respective discipline in every direction. The wide range of faculties at the University of Münster offers countless opportunities for exchange and cooperation at all levels.

Some 550 professors and 4,100 academic staff are currently employed at the University of Münster. The establishment of the Centre for University Teaching (ZHL) promises to significantly advance efforts to professionalise teaching in the future.

Endless possibilities

The University of Münster maintains numerous contacts abroad. The University has approximately 400 official partnerships and cooperation agreements in place with academic institutions around the world. These provide an optimal basis for cross-border studies which can be specifically expanded by any number of international and interdisciplinary master's degree programmes.
