Software Updates

Basic Protection according to current Security Standards

The use of up-to-date software on a device, such as a notebook, desktop computer, smartphone or tablet, is essential for secure functioning, especially when working on the Internet. Particularly relevant are the operating system and every program that can communicate with the network (e.g. Internet browser and e-mail program). However, all other programs installed can also be a gateway for malware if they are not up to date. The installation of software updates (so-called updates or patches) must be carried out regularly and promptly and ensures not only improved security, but also better usability and stability of the software. Devices for which support and updates are no longer available may only be operated in the network of the University of Münster under certain conditions and with severe restrictions.

  • General Recommendations

    • When using a new or newly installed device (PC, notebook, tablet or smartphone), first install all software updates and activate the automatic update functions (usually already preset). In particular, have the operating system install all updates before working with the end device.
    • Security-critical programs, especially the Internet browser and the e-mail program, must be configured correctly and conscientiously.
    • Download programs only from the manufacturer's website. Do not install or run applications that you are not familiar with, especially if the operating system warns you not to run them.
      • For smartphones and tablets, only install apps from the official app stores. Even there, pay attention to the legitimacy of the app you are installing and check which permissions are requested by the app as well.
    • Many software products offer integrated update routines, where updates are downloaded in the background and installed without further prompting when the program is started. Enable these features where available.
    • For some programs you have to check manually for updates and install them yourself. In most cases, there is an update function in the program menus under the "Extras" or "Help" / "About" entry.
    • The German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) has published relevant information about update and patch management.
