Opening a bank account

If you’re staying in Germany for a longer period of time and are receiving a regular salary or scholarship and have to pay rent, it makes sense to open a current account at a bank. You can do this at any branch of a bank or savings bank (Sparkasse). To do so, you will need your passport or identity card, as well as your certificate of registration (Meldebescheinigung). Some banks also ask to see the residence permit issued by the Foreigners Registration Office.

Banks and savings banks (Sparkassen): There is very little difference between banks as regards the range of services they offer. However, the fees they charge for their services do differ – so it is better to make enquiries beforehand. When you open a current account you will receive a EuroCheque Card (EC Card) which will enable you to withdraw money at the bank’s own cash dispensing machines free of charge, and at other banks machines for a fee.

Money transfers: Money transfers from countries outside Europe can be expensive. Ask your bank in your home country about the relevant terms and conditions – you may want to consider choosing a bank in Germany that has a cooperation agreement with the bank in your home country.
