Information for Applicants from NON-EU Countries

Dear Applicants,
the application deadline for summer semester 2013 entry has expired. Applications for winter semester 2013/14 entry can be submitted from May 2nd 2013 - May 31st 2013. We are looking forward to your applications!


Admission requirements for Master degree programmes

  1. Applicants need a German university entrance qualification or a foreign school-leaving certificate corresponding to the German Abitur (university entrance qualification).

  2. A Bachelor degree in the same or a similar field.

  1. You will need to have an adequate knowledge of German to take part in the courses which are held for the most part in German. Anyone who does not have an adequate knowledge of German can attend language courses. Before you make an application please enquire about which foreign language competence is required for the course you wish to take. Currently you do not need to provide evidence of German language competence for the following Master’s degrees which are taken in English:               
  • Geoinformatics
  • Geospatial Technologies
  • Information Systems
  • Physics
  • National and Transnational Studies
  • British/American and Postcolonial Studies
  • Social Anthropology

  1. Degree programme specific admission requirements: Please check whether the Master degree programme you want to apply for has additional specific admission requirements.

  2. There are additional application requirements for foreign applicants from the following countries:
  • People’s Republic of China
  • Vietnam
  • Mongolia

Application Process for Master degree programmes

  1. Certain times and deadlines apply for applications to the University of Münster. The submission deadline for applications for summer semester 2013 has expired for Non-EU applicants. The next submission period for applications for winter semester 2013/14 entry will be from May 2nd - May 31st 2013. Please note that concerning our deadlines, the university entrance stamp is decisive.

  2. You can only apply for all Master’s degree programmes via the Online applications portal for Master applications. This applies to subjects both with and without restricted access. Please create an account first, and then fill in the application form and upload all required documents as scanned PDFs. If you face problems with the uploading process, please contact our Master Office: masterbuero AT wwu.de

  3. You can apply for maximal 3 Master degree programmes via your account. Whithin your account, please fill in one application form for each Master degree programme. You should not create 3 individual accounts!

  4. At the end you should print out your online application twice. With the printout you will also get a checklist showing all the documents you must submit (and upload) as well as an applicant’s number. This number is important if you have any queries regarding the applications procedure. It is useful to have an additional copy of the printout of your online application for when you apply for your visa. If you apply for more than one Master programme, please print out the application form for each Master application.    

  5. All necessary documents, together with the duly signed printout of your online application, must be sent to the University of Münster before the end of the relevant application period. The following documents are required: 

  • Foreign school-leaving certificate 
  • Bachelor’s certificate
  • CV containing no gaps
  • Evidence of adequate knowledge of German

Please note that applications for a Master’s degree usually also require additional documents to be submitted, e.g.              

  • Bachelor’s certificate with a minimum grade
  • Evidence of additional foreign language(s) (e.g. English, French etc.)
  • Letter of motivation
  • Additional qualifications (work placements etc.)

Please refer to the information from the relevant university department to see whether you need to submit any additional documents with your online application.

  1. All documents are required in the form of officially certified copies. N.B.: Official certification can be provided by any public authority that has an official seal, e.g. municipal authorities, embassies, consulates or notaries. In the case of foreign-language documents, an official translation of these will also be required – in German oder English.

  2. If you apply for more than one Master degree programme, please prepare the documents for each Master programme you want to apply for.

Selection Process and Notification

A selection committee in the university department of the Master programme you apply for decides on which applicants to select. The admission process might take until August-September. Admission/rejection letters will be sent from the beginning of August onwards.

If your application has been successful, you must enrol, either in person or by post, at the Registrar's Office. The notification of acceptance, which will be sent to you by post, contains all the information necessary for enrolment.

After your enrolment Münster University levies a social contribution fee of currently 210€ each semester. .
