Senate of the University of Münster
The Senate is responsible for the university’s statutes, confirms the election of the Rectorate by the University Council and issues ordinances of fundamental importance. The Senate also decides on the appointments of professors proposed by individual university departments.
The Senate comprises twelve university teachers, four research assistants, four students and three members of the non-academic staff. All are entitled to vote. They are elected by the respective groups at the university. The student members remain in office for one year, while all other members of the Senate have a term of office lasting two years.
The Senate has to confirm the election of the Rectorate by the University Council and has the right to make nominations for the office of Kanzler (Head of Administration) of the University. It has set up commissions to prepare resolutions to be passed in the Senate and advises the Rectorate.
