Education
WWU Münster’s 36,000 students make it the third-biggest university in Germany. One important argument for students’ decision to study at WWU is the high-quality teaching it offers.
Excellent teaching quality
With its "Quality Initiative for Teaching and Studying – know.teach.learn" Münster University is strengthening the importance of excellent teaching. This means
- a good ratio of academic staff to students
- the further qualification of teaching staff in the University’s own "Centre of University Teaching"
- an improvement in the quality of advice given to students in their initial study phase in order to reduce the number dropping out
- Optimization of practical relevance during the entire course of study

Broad portfolio
250 courses of study offer students a broad portfolio of options. The increasing internationalization of courses of study and the use of modern information technology in teaching offer students the best possible preparation for the requirements of the global job market.
High success rate
A total of 6,100 graduates a year are testimony to the good teaching provided by WWU – something which the German Council of Science and Humanities (Wissenschaftsrat) itself has also confirmed. WWU compares favourably with other universities not only regarding the length of its courses of study but also with a view to success rates. In addition, WWU Münster confers about 693 doctoral degrees a year, making it one of the five most important institutions in Germany for producing junior research staff.
Bologna implemented
The WWU has completed the changeover of most of its basic courses of study to bachelor/master structures – also for teacher training. The development of programmes for structured doctoral courses represents the next step in the realization of the objectives set out in the Bologna process. Against this background, coordinated programmes for graduate training will acquire a special status.
Doctoral studies
Coordinated programmes for graduate training are currently run in three formats: Postgraduate Groups sponsored by the DFG (German Research Foundation), Graduate Schools and Junior Staff Groups.
