Johannes G. Deckers, Marie-Elisabeth Mitsou, Sabine Rogge (Eds), Beiträge zur Kulturgeschichte Zyperns von der Spätantike bis zur Neuzeit (Contributions to the Cultural History of Cyprus from Late Antiquity to Modern Times)
Schriften des Instituts für Interdisziplinäre Zypern-Studien, Volume 3
(Münster: Waxmann Verlag, 2005)

Within the scope of an interdisciplinary symposium held in Munich in July, 2002, scientists from Germany, Greece and Cyprus discussed exemplary cultural phenomena which had been typical for the history of Cyprus in the millennial period from Late Antiquity to early Modern Times. This event was generously supported by numerous institutes, and organised and hosted by the Institute for Byzantine language and literature studies, Byzantine art history and Modern Greek language and literature studies of the Ludwig-Maximilian-University of Munich.

This volume combines almost all contributions to the symposium. Early Christian Cypriot metal objects and late ancient churches in Amathous are discussed; likewise, the 16th century phenomenon of Petrarkism in poetry which could be discerned in Cyprus. Other topics are the mural paintings in the small church “Agia Solomoni” which originate from the time of iconoclasm, the changeful history of the island in the area of conflict between the Byzantine and Arabic spheres of contol (7th to 10th century B.C.) as well as under Frankish and Venetian rule (1192-1571), the Cypriot dialect at the time of Frankish reign (1192-1473) and the life and work of Leontios Machairas who was the author of the famous Cypriot chronicle which covers the years of Frankish rule to his death around 1432.
