Legal matters

Using internet and German research network (DFN) as part of the internet raises various open questions of law.  Therefore the DFN association has established a research unit for legal matters in the DFN at the university of Münster. It is located next to the Institute for Information-, Telecommunication- and Media Law (ITM) chaired by Prof.Dr. Thomas Hoeren. The research unit focuses on legal issues arising with the use of DFN and makes their research results publicly available.

The resarch unit Law works as follows:

  • DFN- legal guide and knowledge base (only in German language)
Continuously updated basic document for introducing „legal matters within the DFN“ and substantial background information on topics outlined in the DFN-legal guide.
  • Recommendations
Supply of guidences and sample texts concerning legal issues which affect a major number of DFN-facilities to which facilities may orientate.
  • Requests (only in German language)
Response to legal problems related to the use of the network that are brought to the research unit Law by members of the DFN.
  • DFN-newsletter Law
Publication of a newsletter addressing current developments in legislation and jurisdiction that are relevant for the use of DFN.
  • Comments (only in German language)
Comments on legislative projects concerning the legal framework of using electronic information and communication services.
  • Presentations
Schoolings on current legal matters at regular intervals, especially in context of DFN conferences and DFN general meetings.
