"Green" HPC

In order to facilitate scientific high-performance computing (High Performance Computing), the ZIV has up to now provided the ZIVcluster of 2003. This system is based on processors of the Pentium-IV-/Netburst-technology that was common at that time. Its energy consumption was about 35 kilowatts.
In preparation of the acquisition of a successor system planned for 2009, the ZIV has acquired a „temporary solution“ with the latest technology in 2008. This solution offers three times the computing power with an energy consumption of only 7 kilowatts. The energy saved by the early shutdown of the old ZIVcluster means a financial benefit for Muenster University (about € 30, 000, - per year). What is more, it means an annual reduction of CO2-emissons by 144 tons (28kW less energy consumption at almost 365x24 operating hours equal about 240,000 kWh energy saving per year. Normally, the production of 1 kWh electric energy results in a CO2-emission of 600g).
It goes without saying that energy-efficiency is of central importance when it comes to acquiring a new, up-to-date high-performance computing system that meets the requirements of the scientists of Muenster University.
