Opening celebration and first symposium of the Collaborative Research Centre TRR 61 'Multilevel Molecular Assemblies: Structure, Dynamics and Function'
The Collaborative Research Centre TRR 61 was officially opened on 10th December 2008 with a celebration ceremony in the assembly hall of the University of Münster. Members of the Chinese-German consortium
and guests, not only scientists but also representatives of the University of
Münster, of the Ministry for Innovation, Science, Research and Technology of North Rhine-Westphalia
(Ministerium für Innovation, Wissenschaft, Forschung und Technologie, NRW) and of the city of
Münster underlined the specific meaning of this interdisciplinary transregional Chinese-German
research project regarding scientific and technological innovation and development.
The speakers, Prof. Dr. Harald Fuchs, responsible for the German part, and Prof. Dr. Xi Zhang, responsible for the Chinese part, introduced major approaches and concepts of TRR 61 to the audience.
Prof. Dr. Daoben Zhu, Vice President of the National Scientific Foundation of China (NSFC) illustrated the cooperation between the German Research Foundation (DFG)
and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) providing the funding for the next four years of the
TRR61.
The invited expert, Prof. Dr. Helmut Ringsdorf, University of Mainz, Germany shed light on European
as well as on national funding schemes, and emphasized the need of young creative
researchers who are willing to step across borders, and the need of appropriate
support, because only creativeness can ensure scientific progress and its benefit for human societies.
To complete the celebration some short pieces of music were given, among them two Chinese-vigurian
folksongs, presented by a Chinese singer.
The next day the first TRR61 symposium took place at the Center of Nano Technology (CeNTech) and
was attended by about 50 persons. First of all Prof. Fuchs was honoured by representatives of the
Tsinghua University Prof. Ziqiang Wang and Prof. Dr. Xi Zhang with a guest professorship at the
Tsinghua University, Beijing for a period of three years, which he gratefully accepted.
As the TRR 61 started in July, the research groups have been established and could already present and discuss their ongoing work The presentations were followed by lively discussions which resulted in lots of proposed additional
cooperation between the individual groups. The third day was dedicated to introduce the Chinese scientists to the
laboratories available for the researchers of the TRR 61, and to individual discussions among the
researchers.
