Our team was successful in developing a new, fast and selective method for radiolabelling of organic compounds by using the radioactive isotope 18F-fluorine. This study was recently published in the Journal of Organic Chemistry. The PhD thesis of the main author Dr. Verena Hugenberg was supported by the SFB.
New publication: Imaging reveals potential for non-invasive diagnostics of allograft rejection after kidney transplantation
[2010-09-29] Kidneys are the most frequently transplanted organs and as they are part of the cardiovascular system imaging the kidneys is challenging our research: Allograft rejection can lead to the loss of the "new" kidney in the worst case. Until now, invasive biopsies - which are associated with potential risks - are necessary to diagnose allograft rejection. With the help of molecular imaging by PET we are able to non-invasively detect allograft rejection and monitor the response to drug therapy in a disease model. Our study has recently been published in the Journal of Nuclear Medicine. Abstract

New publication: HED PET for investigation of cardiac disease models
[2010-08-23] Dysfunction of the sympathetic nervous system underlies many cardiac diseases and is assessed in patients by PET using a radiolabelled nor-adrenaline mimetic called [11C]mHED. Can we use similar techniques for the evaluation of human disease-specific models to further advance medical treatment for human cardiac disease? A new study of our team published in the Journal of Nuclear Medicine shows that we can assess the cardiac sympathetic nervous system in disease models if the specific activity of the injected [11C]mHED is high enough. With a radioactive half life of only 20 minutes we need to work quickly! abstract

From heart to brain: EIMI expands molecular imaging to brain research

[2010-07-07] Yesterday, Professor Andreas H. Jacobs, director of the European Institute for Molecular Imaging (EIMI), welcomed around 100 guests to his inaugural lecture on molecular imaging in translational neurological research. Professor Otmar Schober, spokesman of our research centre and founding member of the EIMI gave an overview on the background of molecular imaging research in Münster followed by Andreas H. Jacobs showing how molecular imaging of neurological diseases can be applied in preclinical and clinical diagnostics. With his professorship, which he holds since October 2009, molecular imaging at the EIMI is expanded to the field of brain research. Michael Schäfers, who has the second professorship of the EIMI in the area of heart research and the team offered a warm official welcome to Jacobs.
New Publication: Molecular imaging elucidates mechanisms in cardiac arrhythmia development in sodium channel dysfunction
[2010-07-07] In sodium channel dysfunction resulting in long QT syndrome type 3, impaired autonomic innervation contributes to cardiac arrhythmias. In a study which has been published hot of the press in the journal "Cardiovascular research" molecular imaging technology in the SFB was employed to demontrate decreased ß-adrenoceptor density in hearts with arrhythmias. The paper results from a cooperation of projects A 5, A 8, C 1 und Z 5 with national and international partners. Click here for the whole publication. Further results of ongoing studies on chronic cardiac effects of sodium channel dysfunction are to be presented in the Cardiovascular Research Award Session at "Frontiers in Cardiovascular Biology" (July 16-19, Berlin).
Detection of respiratory motion improves heart diagnostics and reduces the exposure dose to cancer patients

[2010-06-09] One of the great challenges in visualizing cardiovascular diseases with CT or PET is the fact that the heart is moving due to its contraction and respiration. If this motion is been detected and corrected before visualization, precise images can be generated for improved diagnostics. This new method of motion correction has now been integrated in the radiotherapy planning procedure at the university hospital of Münster and successfully applied to the 100th patient. The new technology which has been developed in collaboration with our team measures the respiratory induced tumor motion. Accounting for this motion, the planning target volume of patients could on average be reduced by 30%! more …
