Ph. D. project:

Virgil, Horace and Propertius about authorship

This dissertation project examines the concepts of authorship that are explicitly debated or that implicitly surface in the poetical texts of the Augustean poets Horace, Virgil and Propertius. Selected texts by Horace, Virgil and Propertius take centre stage, whose understanding of authorship is questioned inductively. The multiplicity of genres which the investigated texts relate to, e.g. by allusions and the imitation of preceding texts, permits the comparative analysis of bucolic, lyrical and elegiac speech in their synchronic use of authorship. In addition to an intra-literary authority which the narrators acquire through authentication strategies, e.g. by details about their autobiography or the sources of their knowledge or by implicitly expressing a claim to power, they transcend literary discourse and also lay interdiscursive claim to authority in other fields of knowledge, such as cult or politics.
