Changes on macroevolutionary timescales produce novel gene functions and lineage-specific genetic properties. The increasing wealth of comparative genomic data in insects, coupled with the experimental tractability of lab model species, provides new opportunities to examine these phenomena. Here I will discuss our lab’s recent work, centered on the ostensibly highly conserved Hox genes, to examine an instance of paralogue functional diversification in the beetle Tribolium castaneum and the implications of lineage-specific gene structure features in the Hemiptera.
