Welcome at the Institute for Planetology

Education
The Institut für Planetologie performs teaching and research in Planetary Sciences with a particularly interdisciplinary approach including geochemical, geological, geophysical, and mineralogical methods. It provides graduate teaching and training in these disciplines and in the relevant technologies.

Research
The general research theme is the solar system, its origin, history and present status. The objects studied are planets and their satellites, meteorites, impact craters, comets, interplanetary dust particles (IDPs), and the presolar nebula. Research activities and results are presented for the general public through WWU press releases.

Facilities and Cooperations
The available research facilities consist of state-of-the-art and comprehensive microanalytical laboratories (interdisciplinary center for electron microscopy and microanalysis ICEM), a cluster of Unix and Linux workstations and PCs, image processing and the required sample preparation equipment.

The institute actively participates in various space experiments and in general is lively embedded in many national and international cooperations. It is also central to the coordination of the DFG Priority Program 1115 "Mars and the Terrestrial Planets".
