Observation of J/ psi production by neutrinos in the calorimeter of the CHORUS detector exposed to the CERN SPS wide-band v/sub mu / beam is reported. A spectrum-averaged cross section sigma /sup J/
psi /=(6.3+or-3.0)*10/sup -41/ cm/sup 2/ is obtained for 20 GeV
