There is presently strong experimental evidence suggesting the event of the QCD phase transition in Pb+Pb and Au+Au collisions at SPS and RHIC energies. Hard probes (e.g. 'J/Psi suppression', 'jet quenching'), while outstanding for the identification of a Quark Gluon Plasma state, may be overcritical. We will elaborate on the role of light flavoured hadrons and in particular of strangeness, for the understanding of the QCD phase transition and the determination of its critical parameters.
