to understand "what holds the Earth together in its centre"
(Johann Wolfgang von Goethe)
In
Seismology waves from seismic sources (earthquakes, explosions...) are used to study the structures in Earth's mantle, crust, and core. Those seismic structures can provide information on processes and composition of the Earth's deep interior. In the seismology group at the WWU, detailed studies of seismic structures with the aid of array seismology are carried out: for example in the deep mantle, the D"region, the detection of deep subducted litosphere, and the mantle transition zone between 410 and 660 km depth.
