The CREEP project


The CREEP project (Complex RhEology in Earth dynamics and industrial Processes, http://www.creep-itn.eu/) is an EU-funded Innovative Training Network for young geoscience researchers. In this project, we study the deformation processes which take place at different time and spatial scale, in different Earth (mostly) and industrial’s materials. This is done by using a multidisciplinary approach from geodynamics and seismology to (and through) mineral physics. As an example, plastic deformation at crystal scale (dislocation CREEP) has a controlling role in brittle deformation like crustal faulting and earthquakes nucleation. On the other side, the same phenomenon leads to rocks ductile deformation by crystals alignment (lattice preferred orientation, LPO) and resulting measurable seismic anisotropy. It has been seen that seismic anisotropy in the mantle is mainly concentrated at its thermal boundary layers (the lithosphere and the core mantle boundary), being most likely the result of deformation related to flow in the mantle.
