Surface Tectonics and Internal Dynamics of Mars

This project aims at a better understanding of the coupling between internal dynamics, thermal structure and surface tectonics on Mars. By means of a numerical model we investigate the influence of early plate-tectonics and the consequences of its later disappearance on the dynamics of Mars. The shut off of an early dynamo on the Martian core has been discussed as one possible consequence. As an important prerequisite a numerical model has been developed which allows for the simulation of plate-like motions. At present, there exist only a few models which can model plate tectonics in a self-consistent manner. It is commonly believed that plate-tectonics is not existing on present Mars. Mars is a 'one-plate-planet', characterized by an immobile lithosphere, covering a convecting Martian mantle. We investigate also the transport properties within this dynamic regime.
