Germany Raises Questions on Song's Conviction

BERLIN, March 30 (Yonhap) -- The German government Tuesday raised questions about the conviction of the Korean-German scholar Song Doo-yul by a South Korean court for serving as a powerful Politburo member of North Korea in violation of South Korea's anti-communist law, a foreign ministry spokesman said Tuesday.

The German official, who refused to identified himself, said in a telephone interview, "We have a variety of questions about the court sentence (on Song)."
Earlier in the day, a Seoul court delivered Song seven years in prison, convicting him of violationg the strict National Security Law which bans any contact with North Korea unless approved by the Seoul government.
