Court delays verdict on German scholar

The last session of the trial of Song Du-yul, scheduled for today, has been postponed, the Seoul District Court announced yesterday. The court is hearing the case of the Korean-German scholar who has been indicted for violating the National Security Law by promoting North Korean interests.
Choi Yeong-chul, a court official, said yesterday that the postponement was necessary because Hwang Jang-yop did not testify as requested.
Mr. Hwang, the most senior North Korean to have defected to Seoul, had accused Mr. Song of being a senior member of the North Korean Workers' Party.
The court had been scheduled to announce a verdict today; instead, it will hold another trial session, although it is not clear if Mr. Hwang will now attend.
Mr. Choi said the court would not compel his testimony.
