Scientific Career

  • 1995-1999 Studies in mineralogy at Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster
  • 1999 Diploma in mineralogy at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster.
Title of the thesis: "Electron microscopy and microanalysis of zoned and anisotropic garnets" (in german)

Subject of the doctoral thesis: "Non-equilibrium crystal growth patterns: Case studies on oscillatory zoning and mineral replacement reactions"
Research
  • Mechanisms of mineral-fluid interaction in nature and experiment: replacement reactions in solid solutions such as garnet, olivine, apatite, pyrochlore, KBr-KCl,
  • Pattern formation during (non-)equilibrium crystal growth and dissolution-reprecipitation reactions:
1. oscillatory zoning in grossular-andradite garnet, plagioclase, barite-celestite, muscovite
2. generation of porosity in replacement reactions
3. structure of reaction (replacement) interfaces
  • Solid solution-aequeous solution (SS-AS) relationships at equilibrium and non-equilibrium
  • Calculation of thermodynamic properties in solid solutions
  • Analytical techniques mainly used: TEM, SEM, Microprobe, XRD
